Losing the Baby Weight

Pregnancy and baby weight

I recently had someone tell me that they're frustrated with trying to lose weight. She had lost 100 pounds before (before having her three beautiful girls), and was now struggling.

Here's the thing- of course it was easier before pregnancy.

You THEN (before kids) is different from the you NOW. You can’t compare your weight loss journey pre kids to the one you’re on now.

Not only have your body and hormones changed, so have your life circumstances.

You have a baby (maybe multiple!) and it’s challenging. Figuring out sleep, nursing, schedules, teething, going back to work, and your relationship with your partner…it’s a lot.

And on top of that, you still want to feel good about yourself and get back to a body that’s familiar to you.

When we have kids, our bodies change. Regardless of whether or not we like it (okay, okay, we definitely DON’T like it), they change.

Stretch marks, extra skin, cellulite, belly pooch that won’t go away…definitely not as glamorous as our maternity pictures make pregnancy out to be.

Thanks kid(s).

But here’s the thing: regardless of whether you’re a first or third time mom, caring for a baby isn’t a walk in the park.

You probably don’t have as much time to dedicate to exercise and meal planning.

Right now you’re focusing on diaper changes and your sanity.

But while your responsibilities have shifted, you also have more tools in your toolbox (I call them life experiences). That means you’re wiser than you were pre kids (and less naive) and can be more resourceful.

Give yourself the grace of knowing that pre baby and post baby you are different people.

Allow yourself time to grieve the woman you were before. You’ve evolved. In this stage of life, you’ve leveled up.

And as a mom, you’re doing the most difficult job you’ve ever had to do, likely on very little sleep.

Maybe losing weight post baby will take longer.

Maybe it will feel tenfold more difficult.

But you can still do it.

You’re a mama now. Which basically means you have superpowers. You can do anything.
